Fancy Fonts Character Limit: Why Your Bio Gets Cut Off
You paste a styled bio into Instagram, it fits in the generator, and then the app cuts it short or refuses to save it. The cause is the fancy fonts character limit: many styled letters are stored as two units of text instead of one, so a bio can be "longer" to the app than it looks to you. This guide explains why that happens, which styles take the most space, and how to fit your text under each platform's limit.
Why fancy fonts use more characters
Every character on your phone has a number in the Unicode standard. Plain letters like "a" have small numbers and are stored in a single 16-bit unit. Most fancy letters, such as bold ๐, script ๐ช or double-struck ๐, come from a block called Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols, which sits above number 65,535. Characters that high are stored as a pair of 16-bit units, known as a surrogate pair.
Apps built on JavaScript, Java or Swift often count those units instead of visible characters. So "hello" in plain text is 5, but ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ต๐ต๐ธ can count as 10. Some platforms count the way you see it; others count the raw units. That difference is what makes a bio fit in one place and fail in another.
Which styled text characters count double
| Style | Example | Units per letter |
|---|---|---|
| Bold, italic, script, gothic, double-struck, monospace | ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ ยท ๐ข๐ฌ๐ป๐ฒ๐น๐ฝ ยท ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐๐ | 2 |
| Squared and filled-bubble letters | ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ฐ๐ ๐ด ยท ๐ ๐ ค๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ | 2 |
| Small caps | ๊ฑแดแดสส แดแดแด๊ฑ | 1 |
| Fullwidth "aesthetic" | ๏ฝ๏ฝ ๏ฝ๏ฝ๏ฝ๏ฝ ๏ฝ๏ฝ๏ฝ | 1 |
| Circled letters | โโโกโโโ | 1 |
| Zalgo / glitch | gฬทlฬธiฬตtฬถcฬดhฬท | 1 per letter + 1 per mark |
Zalgo is a special case. Each letter only takes one unit, but every combining mark stacked on it is a separate character too. A word with ten marks per letter can be ten times longer than it looks.
Character limits on popular platforms
- Instagram bio: 150 characters.
- TikTok bio: 80 characters.
- X (Twitter) bio: 160 characters; display name: 50.
- Discord "About Me": 190 characters.
Platforms change these limits from time to time, so if a number above doesn't match what you see, trust the app. What stays true is the rule of thumb: with double-unit styles, plan for your text to count up to twice as long.
How to fit a styled bio under the limit
- Measure before you paste. The Instagram bio builder counts against the 150-character limit and warns you when a double-unit style may push you over. On the main generator, the โ button on any style shows both counts.
- Style one line, not all of them. A script name with plain bio lines underneath looks cleaner and saves space.
- Switch to single-unit styles. Small caps (๊ฑแดแดสส แดแดแด๊ฑ) and fullwidth letters look decorative but count as one.
- Cut decorations first. A frame like ๊งเผ เผ๊ง costs six characters before your text starts.
- Go light on Zalgo. Use intensity 1 to 3 in the Zalgo controller for bios and names.
Quick answers
Why does my bio fit in the generator but not on Instagram?
The generator shows what you see; the app may count the hidden units. Check the second number in the โ panel or the bio builder warning.
Do emoji count double too?
Most emoji are also stored as surrogate pairs, and some (like flags or skin-tone variations) are several characters joined together, so they can count as 2 or more units each.
