How creepy text and Zalgo work
Creepy "Zalgo" text is ordinary letters with dozens of combining marks stacked on them. Combining marks are Unicode characters (mostly from the block U+0300 to U+036F) made for accents: the mark in é is one of them. They have no width of their own, so they attach to the letter before them. Put ten of them on one letter and the accents pile up into the dripping, glitching shape that horror posts and creepypasta titles use.
The controller above gives you the three settings that change the look. Intensity sets how many marks go on each letter. Above and below choose where they stack, and through adds strike and overlay marks that cut across the letter. The base font changes the letters underneath, so a gothic base with marks below looks very different from small caps with marks above.

Where creepy fonts get trimmed
Heavy Zalgo can break layouts, so many apps limit it. Name and username fields often reject combining marks or cap how many you can use. Chat apps may cut long stacks or clip them to the line height, and some comment systems remove them entirely. Every mark also counts as a character: the stats line under the output shows the real length, which matters when a field has a limit. If a platform rejects your text, lower the intensity or switch off "through" marks first.
Scary fonts without the glitch
Not every creepy look needs Zalgo. Gothic blackletter (𝔠𝔯𝔢𝔢𝔭𝔶) and bold gothic (𝖈𝖗𝖊𝖊𝖕𝖞) come from Unicode's mathematical fraktur letters and stay perfectly clean on every platform. Use creepy text with care
- Screen readers: they can read every combining mark aloud. Keep important information in plain text.
- Group chats: heavy Zalgo spills over the messages above and below it. Use it sparingly.
- Usernames: gothic letters plus one symbol (☠ name ☠) last longer than Zalgo, which is often stripped.
- Halloween captions: glitch the first word for impact, then write the rest in plain text.
Frequently asked questions
How does Zalgo cursed text work?
Zalgo stacks Unicode combining marks, the characters used for accents, on top of and below normal letters. Because each mark is a separate character, a letter can carry many of them, which creates the glitch effect. Most apps display Zalgo, but some limit or remove heavy stacks.
Does creepy text work on Instagram and TikTok?
Mostly yes. Instagram and TikTok both render Zalgo, gothic fraktur and Old English in bios and captions. Some app versions truncate very heavy Zalgo, so try a lighter glitch first to test.
Why does my Zalgo text look broken on some apps?
Apps that limit combining marks may strip them or clip them to the line height, and heavy stacks overlap the lines around them, so some apps trim them. If your text looks broken, lower the intensity in the Zalgo controller above or switch off the 'through' marks.
Is creepy text safe for usernames?
In display names, often yes: gothic and Old English letters work on most platforms, and light Zalgo works on many. Account usernames (the @handle) usually allow only plain letters, numbers and a few symbols, so styled text is rejected there. Heavy Zalgo may be rejected as 'invalid characters', so start light.
Can I use creepy text for a Halloween party invite?
For digital invites, yes: paste a styled title into a WhatsApp message, a post or an invitation app. For printed invites, use a real blackletter font in a design app, because pasted Unicode letters can print in a different fallback font.
